obama in last night's televised debate. so the first televised presidential debate that we had was in 1960. here are all of the other years that we have since have televised presidential debates. every four years now we have these debates on tv. the only years, though, so these are all the years, right, right? the only years, though, in which you had an incumbent president running against a challenger in all of the years we've had presidential debates on tv are these years. so in terms of understanding the historical context of what happened last night when mitt romney beat president obama in this first debate, this is the universe of like things to compare it to. this is how to understand it in terms of american political history. it's only these years right here. that's it. now, by definition, you never have an incumbent president in this situation more than once. presidents can only serve two terms so there's only one opportunity when they carry into that debate, when they're running for re-election, they carry into that debate the gravitas of being the president of the united stat

many press conferences lately, but that is not the same as a presidential debate. what president obama fell into last night is something of a historical pattern where incumbent presidents are rusty. they're just not accustomed to being confronted on a debate stage that first time out. ronald reagan had this problem in 1984. george w. bush had it in 2004 against john kerry. look, when you're president, one of the many privileges of your office is that where you sit people do not customarily walk in and tell you you're wrong or full of crap. it just doesn't happen. >> right. >> what happens in a debate is your challenger looks you straight in the eye and says you're fundamentally wrong and you're taking the country down the wrong direction. the president turns around and says what? i'm doing everything i can. it's that adjustment period the president did not respond well to last night and i guarantee you having talked to many obama advisors in denver last night they're going to retool the preparations, his attitude and demeanor. >> how big of shift in this campaign this was debate?

lead story, assessing the presidential debate last night. as we mentioned the consensus is that mitt romney deteethed barack obama. and today mr. obama under his energy a bit. >> so you see the man on stage last night, he does not want to be held accountable for the real mitt romney's decisions and what he has been saying for the last year. so governor romney may dance around his positions but if you want to be president, you owe the american people the truth. >> bill: joining us now from washington fox news analyst charles krauthammer. give me something new, charles, give me something you picked up during that debate. >> what i learned by watching it is that mitt romney doesn't seem like the kind of guy who kills the wives of laid off steal workers, which is another way of saying that negative campaigning. negative ads are double-edged. they have had a tremendous effect. including that really revolting add ad that was run against romney with a steel worker whose wife died of cancer looking into the camera blaming it essentially on romney and saying romney doesn't care about anybody.
